Publisher’s Summary
In the decades since the initial publication of The Way of the Superior Man, society has changed significantly. Issues of gender and sexuality long confined to secrecy have become part of everyday conversation, and rigid ideas about our societal roles have begun to dissolve.
And yet, perhaps now more than at any time, men of all ages still “tussle with the challenges of women, work, and sexual desire.” In this unabridged audiobook of the classic guide to masculine spirituality, David Deida encourages men and women to lean into the conversation and offer their most valuable assets to the world—their authentic heart and depth of presence.
More relevant than ever, The Way of the Superior Man offers a view of a more conscious and embodied masculinity. “It is time to evolve beyond the macho jerk ideal, all spine and no heart”, writes Deida. “It is also time to evolve beyond the sensitive and caring wimp ideal, all heart and no spine.”
Including a new preface written in celebration of the book’s 20th anniversary, The Way of the Superior Man presents the next generation of with the opportunity to grapple with fear, cultivate trust in the moment, and put forth the best versions of themselves in an ever-changing world.
Read by Cecil Archbold.

The inferior man…
The author’s premise seems to focus on a man’s desire to pursue his mission in life (which is great), however spends a great deal of time with almost dogmatic obsession with the mythological idea of divine energies and how a man should effectively “sacrifice himself”, “give his gifts”, and essentially put up with the shit a woman will put him through to prove his masculinity. This combined with the insistence that a women’s resistance to sexual advances is meant to be pressed is incredibly risky in an age where simply being male is enough to get one accused of sexual assault.
The ideas promoted here are dated appearing to rebirth the male chivalry of medieval times with the feminine liberated solely to impede a man’s efforts simply for their own entertainment. The assumption that women do this to test a man’s capacity to remain focused assumes far too much about today’s female culture. The suggestion that a man should participate in such utter nonsense only serves to perpetuate the needless cycle of frustration and lack of accountability either sex has.
While the concept of sexual polarity is plausible, and increased polarity results in increased tension and sexual passion, this cannot be viewed in microcosm of the relationship as a whole. The advances in technology, medicine and relaxation from tradition and religion have allowed men and women the freedom to explore relationship roles alternative to the culturally prescribed roles that once were mandated to survive. Rather than desiring polarity, it is entirely possible (and more stable) for a couple to be more-balanced in their activities without sacrificing their gender identity. In this sense, the couple’s love grows from a continuing pattern of mutual exchange of efforts towards mutual benefits or goals.

A woman’s thoughts
Even as a woman “sourced within her feminine” , I have found this book having a profound impact on my life and quote it’s author frequently when talking to both my male and female friends. It’s insights are poignant, immensely perceptive, and rooted in realism while maintaining an uplifting and inspiring tone. I share it’s views with my parents who have been married for over 35 years, to my friends struggling to find confidence in new careers and maintaining or starting new relationships. Between this book and it’s teaching sessions which I have also listened to multiple times as well, I have recommended it’s pages and continue to address its views to a very diverse collection of people.
