    Not enough existential dread

The majority of the short stories were only tangentially lovecraftian (eg passingly mentioned lovecraftian monsters to try and invoke lovecraftian themes in an otherwise standard spooky pulp fiction) and none inspired existential dread. There were multiple instances where I didn’t notice that one story had ended and another had begun, because they weren’t engaging enough to hold my attention while I was just doing the dishes or walking in the park. “The Same Deep Waters as You” was probably the closest to what I was hoping for, but still didn’t quite hit the spot. I was hoping to get a story like ‘person sacrifices everything to climb a mountain only to find that the mountain was a monster; and for that paradigm shift in their understanding of the reality make them question the philosophical value of self-sacrifice to achieve a feat (ie mountain climbing) that amounts to nothing in the face of the monster and the universe’. But none of the stories really opened up any good philosophical dialogue or made me question my place in the universe.
